Abstract

Basic lead acetate is a common clarifying agent in sugar determination especially in sugar factories. Because of its toxic nature and hazard of contamination of the environment a mixture of zinc actate and Calcium hydroxide, zinc acetate and calcium hydroxide, alumminum sulfate, and alumminum chloride plus calcium hydroxide were used. The results of these studies show that the mixture of zinc acetate and calcium hydroxide is the most suitable substitute for basic lead acetate with regard of sugar determination, speed of filtration, clarification, N,K and a-amino N.
