Results of conveyance loss measurements in representative earthen canals in Ahwaz and shavur region are analyzed.
The measurements are made with inflow outflow and pondingmethod.Regarding the canal conditions and the results obtained the main causes for the occuring losses have been discussed and the coefficients of the exponential loss formula have been derived. Methods of measurement and analysis of results presented here can be used as a basis for the study and evaluation of losses occouring in the canals in a large region. Measured losses for the two methods were close. These losses were about 3.2 liters per second per 100 meter for Avas and 2.4 l/s/100 m for shavur.
A survey of the conditions of earthen canals in the region showed that long canals, loose sides, presence of holes and cracks, improper management and absence of control structures are the main causes for the major part of occurring losses.
