Abstract

Water infiltration is influenced by soil initial water content as well as soil physical characteristics such as texture, saturation percentage and bulk density. In the current study, results published by Maheshwari (1996) concerning non-cracked Australian soils were employed. Geometric means, Standard error and coefficient of variation were calculated and then a complex of these parameters along with other soil physical characteristics were applied to estimate the three reliable infiltration equations of: Kostiakov, Phillip and Horton by using multiple regression. Results indicated that these equations can be properly estimated by pedotransfer thnction equations through using a complex of soil statistical and physical characteristic parameters as independent parameters. All hydraulic parameters in these infiltration equations, except exponential coefficient, were estimated through pedotransfer thnctions. Finally the fitted (by infiltration equations), estimated (by pedotransfer functions) and observed cumulative infiltration rates were compared. The results indicated that while using pedotransfer thnctions, the estimated Kostiakov’s equation is more reliable than estimated Phillips.
