Abstract

Sweet corn has a high yield potential in Khuzestan province. When for any reason, planting of grain com is delayed, sweet com could be used as an alternative cash crop. In order to study the effect of planting dates (22 August, 1, 10 and 20 September) on yield of two sweet com hybrids, an experiment was conducted in 1993-1994. Analysis
of variance(_ based on split plot design showed that kernal dry yield for different dates of
planting were significantly different, where August 22 with 6 Mgha-1 out yielded other dates of planting. Among yield components, number of kernels per row showed the highest sensitivity to planting date. Number of kernels per row in August 22 treatment was fewer than that of September 1 due to coincidence of pollination with high temperatures. However, higher translocation rate of assimilates in August 22 treatment compensated for this shortcoming. The highest economical yield (ear fresh weight at economical harvest time) in both hybrids which was about 21 Mgha-1, was obtained from August 22. The results of this experiment revealed that when planted at proper time, hybrid HMX-esteem is more productive than HJ\D( - 8394 in terms of both dry matter production and efficiency of assimilate distribution. Thus hybrid HMX-esteem showed higher sensitivity to delay in planting as compared with hybrid HMX - 8394.
