Abstract

In 1981 the Karaj 1 wheat variety was crossed with Naz and Azar in two selection experiments. Selections were made by three methods, namely the Bulk selected, the incomplete Bulk and the complete Bulk. Two hundred individual plants were selected by each method in 1987. In 1990, 40 lines were selected by each method and also, at last 26 lines per method were selected and planted along with 3 of their relative parent lines in a simple lattice design of 99 for each experiment. In each experiment, selection methods were compared based on the characters. Analysis of variance for characters was conducted for 81 lines. Heritability and correlation coefficients were calculated for the characters under study. The selected Bulk method was superior over the incomplete and complete Bulk with respect to the yield but no significant difference was observed with 1000 seed weight. The selected Bulk in the first experiment was superior over the other two methods, but the result was vice versa in the second experiment. Not much difference was observed between the three method regarding the biological yield of the selected plants. In the analysis of variance for the 81 lines, significant differences were observed between the first experiment with respect to 1000 seed weight and in the second experiment with respect to the yield and 1000 seed weight. The result obtained from the heritability showed that 1000 seed weight had a higher heritability. Correlation was positive and significant between yield, biological yield and harvest index in both experiments. Positive and significant correlation between yield and 1000 seed weight was only observed ‘in the first experiment. Correlation was positive and significant in both experiments between biological yield and plant height. No correlation was observed between biological yield and harvest index. Yield had a negative correlation with protein percentage and zeleny number and a positive and significant correlation was observed between protein percentage and bread volume and zèleny number. There was a negative and significant correlation between harvest index, protein percentage and zeleny number.
