Iranian native chickens are well adopted to poor nutrition and management , and are resistant to unfavourable natural conditions and native diseases. The importance of genetic and breed identities of the local chickens , and lack of any information in this respect, necessitates basic cytological studies . Theses studies can provide the basis for breed comparisons, as well as, knowledge on the extent of their intermix with exotic breeds. In this research four breeds of zardekerk, Ghardanloknt, Marandi and umoomi were karyotyped and G-banded (Zardekerk and Marandi). These karyotypes were compared within local breeds and between local and an imported breeds did not show apparent chromosome morphological differences. The same was true when G-banded chromosomes were compared between Zardekerk, Marandi and New Hampshire. Chromosome lenghts and centromeric indices of Marandi chromosomes , as a local breed representative, generally, agree with reports for exotic breeds.Namly new hampshire, breed. Results , While confirming previous representative chicken breeds , indicate that iranian local breeds have karyotypes similar to other chicken breeds. comparisons between four local breeds and between local and imported breeds.
