Abstract

This investigation was carried out to indicate the use of corn silage in producing beef with lower cost. A total of eight Holstein bull calves were used in this expriment. The calves were randomly divided into two groups of four calves each (control and experimental) which were reared in similar environmental conditions. The duration of the experiment was 20 weeks during which the calves were individually weighed biweekly and were fed according to their rate of growth. The control group was fed 40% concentrate and 60% dry alfalfa hay on dry matter basis, whereas, the experimental group were fed 40% concentrate and 60% corn silage on dry matter basis.
All calves were slaughtered at the end of the experiment to obtain the carcass data. The results indicate dthat the calves of the experimental group fed the corn silage ration had the higher rate of daily gain(l371 g) than the control group (1328 g). However, the difference was not statistically signIficant.
