To study salt tolerance mechanisms in a salt tolerant Iranian wheat cultivar, Mahouti, two salt induced cDNA fragments were detected by differential display, which were named wsr land wsr2. Wsrl is very similar to succinct dehydrogenase iron-sulfur subunit.Over expression of the gene transcripts by salt stress might be an important mechanism in detoxifying sodium toxicity during cell respiration in Mahouti plants. Translated sequence of wsr2 is similar to prophobilinogen deaminase that is a key enzyme in tetrapyroles synthesis.Tetrapyroles are precursor in chlorophyll synthesis. It seems that in a long term salt stress, the expression of this enzyme is increased in tolerant plant to make more tetrapyroles to recover Chlorophyll degradation.
